Logo Mistakes you could be Making

A consistent, aesthetic and professional logo is necessary for any brand: small, medium or large.

Customers often identify brands by their company logo, and ensuring that your company has a recognisable logo is vital. Your company logo is how you distinguish yourself from other companies, as logos are often more memorable than brand names.

However, there are some common mistakes which can be made when designing a company logo.

Trying to design a logo yourself if you are an amateur

This is a BIG no-no. You may think that designing your own logo can save you money: in reality, it could actually cost you money. Using a professional to design your logo will usually mean that your logo is more successful, leading to new customers. Designing a logo yourself could mean that you miss out on these new customers who may be put off by your amateur and unprofessional logo. If your logo looks amateurish, so will your business.

Relying on trends

Trends come and go, whether that is fashion trends, technology trends or …. logo trends. Your logo, if well-designed, should be timeless, and avoiding following fads and trends will mean that you avoid having to rebrand and design a new up-to-date logo at a later date.

Using raster images

A raster image, also called a bitmap, is a way to represent digital images. It can be created in a wide variety of formats, including the familiar .gif, .jpg, and .bmp. The image is represented in a series of bits of information that translate into pixels on the screen. These pixels form points of color that create an overall finished image. However, when zoomed in on, these images will appear visually pixelated. Using a raster image can make your logo look untidy an unprofessional, and vector graphics software should be used to avoid this.

Being overly complex

Keep your logo design SIMPLE. When printed in different sizes, complicated logos can lose some of their effect. The simpler the design, the more effective the logo can be and the easier it is to use as a brand.

Relying on colour

Never rely on colour for your logo. Remember, sometimes print can only be in black and white, so relying on colour for your logo could be useless. Try to focus on a unique or easily recognisable pattern, rather than a colour.

Choosing the wrong font

Choose a font that looks professional – there are too many fonts that will make your logo appear amateurish. Ensure that your font is easy to read and is a suitable size. Additionally, stick to one font as using multiple fonts looks untidy.

Finally, DO NOT COPY OTHERS.

This is the biggest mistake logo designers can make. The idea is to create your own distinguishable logo which is unique and identifiable from others. Copying someone else’s logo is not only unprofessional, but is also confusing for potential customers.
